"Kinrara", in Gaelic "Ceann-Rara" is a Scottish reel in F Major the parts are played AB.
It was composed by William Marshall (1748-1833) at the request of Jane (Nee Maxwell), Duchess
of Gordon.
Fraser writes:
"This sprightly air commemorates the mirth and festivity kept up by the late
Duchess of Gordon at Kinrara, every memorial of whom calling to mind how much she is missed".
The Duchess of Gordon built Kinrara House about 1804 on an estate of more than 1,000 acres,
after the collapse of her marriage to the fourth Duke. During the London Season, she lived in
Pall Mall, where she was the political hostess of her day. Her legendary London soirees were
repeated at Kinrara.
It was printed in Fraser's The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and
the Isles (1816/1874) and
Stewart-Robertson's The Athole Collection (1884).
It was recorded by Abby Newton on Castles, Kirks and Caves (2001).
